Very nice, somewhat minimal Eastlake Gas Sconces.
Not simple from modern standard but certainly from the
standpoint of victorian ornamentation.
Classical Eastlake finial and Gas Key with Geometric
Arm back holding Greek Key Gas Shades. 14" height x 7" wide,
12" from wall and 5.5" diameter back plate.
In the
second half of the Victorian period Eastlake and the
Aesthetic Movement were considered the Reform Period
vs. the Revival Period that constituted earlier more
European Designs. Eastlake started a big discussion
that was a reaction to Victorian Ornamentation. The Leisure
Class of the time took his ideas and ran with them.
His book "Hints on Household Taste" was the beginning
of movement away from more traditional design ideas of the period.
